Recovery and Results After Rhinoplasty

Immediate Recovery

Just after surgery, Dr. Albert will apply local anesthesia to maximize your comfort. Most patients will only find manageable discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Albert will work to ensure you have what you need to stay comfortable as your recover. In addition, our team will be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

The First Week

A brief period of wearing a splint is followed by a suture removal appointment after several days. In most cases, Dr. Albert will not need to place packing in the nose, which will make recovery easier. He then will see you five days after your surgery to remove your sutures. About a week following the procedure, your swelling will have mostly subsided, and you can stop wearing your splint.

Your Final Results

Your final, refined results will be visible after just a few weeks. Most people can return to light exercise after three weeks and more strenuous activities, such as weightlifting, after six weeks. After just a short time, you’ll enjoy a full recovery and having taken a crucial step toward fulfilling your aesthetic goals.

Are there nonsurgical options to change my nose?

If you want to smooth lumps and bumps on your nose, the injection of filler might be an option. A filler can temporarily improve minor imperfections, which might help you decide to get a rhinoplasty. Surgical intervention is better for larger changes, long-lasting results, and to adjust the internal structure for better function.

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Ideal candidates are usually in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and are unhappy with the appearance or function of their nose. It's also important that they have fully developed nasal structures, which is typically around age 16 for women and 18 for men.

What are the different types of rhinoplasty?

There are two main types: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty involves an incision across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), allowing for more extensive reshaping. Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible scars, less bruising and swelling, and an overall faster recovery time.

What about ethnic rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is about improving the nose while still keeping your cultural identity. This is often a concern if you are African-American, Asian, or Middle Eastern.

What can I expect during the recovery process?

Recovery typically involves swelling, bruising, and some discomfort for the first few weeks. You will need to wear a nasal splint and avoid strenuous activities. Most people return to work or normal activities within one to two weeks, though complete healing and final results can take several months to a year.

How long do the results of rhinoplasty last?

The results of rhinoplasty are generally permanent. While initial swelling may affect the final shape, the new shape of the nose will be stable once healing is complete.

What are the risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty?

Risks include infection, bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia, scarring, and dissatisfaction with the cosmetic results. There may also be issues with nasal function or breathing if the procedure alters the internal structures of the nose.

How much does rhinoplasty cost?

The cost of rhinoplasty varies widely depending on the surgeon’s experience, geographic location, and the complexity of the procedure. Additional costs like anesthesia and facility fees should also be considered.

Can rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, rhinoplasty can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as chin augmentation or facelift, to achieve a more balanced facial appearance. Your surgeon can help you determine the best approach based on your individual needs.

Will rhinoplasty surgery improve my breathing?

In some cases, a deviated septum or enlarged mucous membranes (turbinates) in the nose cause breathing obstruction. These can usually be corrected at the same time as the cosmetic surgery.

Will insurance pay for part of my surgery?

If there is nasal breathing obstruction due to a deviated septum, or turbinate enlargement, insurance may pay for that portion of the procedure. Also if an outer deformity of the nose is caused by trauma or fracture and needs to be reconstructed, insurance may become involved.
